Paper Chef #19
Paper Chef #19

Problem or opportunity? It's time for another Paper Chef. Number 19, to be precise. This one occurs the week of July 4, Independence Day here in the US, which is either the problem or the opportunity.
Most American cooks are already making plans for their July 4 feast, a day traditionally associated with sunburn, boating accidents, injuries from firecrackers, and endless traffic. However, the food remains a high-point in the American culinary calendar -- and deservedly so, I think. Whether you're eating slow-roasted ribs, homemade cherry pie (or blueberry crisp), or just a couple of dogs with chili and yellow mustard at the beach, typically the food is wonderfully assertive and full of flavor. None of that fancy pants Vichyssoise or Trout Meuniere, gazpacho and grilled tri-tip is more in keeping with the spirit of the day.
Given the national holiday, I'm making a couple of adjustments in the usual Paper Chef.
1) The fourth ingredient is Independence Day -- for whatever country you live in. Make a recipe in some way suitable for celebrating your country's emancipation from its previous rulers or form of government or whatever other thing celebrated to honor nationhood.
2) Ingredient nominations will be accepted through Friday July 30th at 8:00 pm EST and will be posted immediately thereafter.
3) The submission date for entries will Monday, July 10 at 10:00 am EST. This gives everyone a full week to not only come up with a recipe but also get the post written (and clean up from the festivities).
Here is the current list of ingredients (the oldest eight have been removed):

Hey Kevin,
So, the ingredient nominations are open until Friday. That's June 30th, right? Not July? Just making sure.
Thanks for giving us the extra time to post...that will help a lot.
Jennifer,
Correct. June 30th
Crab! I'm hoping to play this time, but will be on vacation all of next week...luckily, we'll have a kitchen available.
Hey Kevin...thanks for keeping PC alive...sorry I haven't been available to play lately but I'll definitely show up this time!
best, Stephen
pine nuts
kevin - thanks again for taking this while I'm unable to do it - I am still hoping to get back to it soon.
In the meantime, how about pork - any kind - as an ingredient?
For the bicentennial (1976) we were living in England and my Dad dug a pit in the middle of the backyard and pit-roasted a whole pig overnight as well as home brewing a barrel of root beer and making lots of potato salad, slaw etc. Then he opened the gate at the front of the house and put up a sign that said all - meaning anyone at all - were welcome. It was great.
S'kat,
Crab added.
Stephen,
Outstanding!
Curious,
Done.
Owen,
Glad to help and I'll add pork.
That sound's like a great 4th! I'd love to be part of something like that.
In honor of food independence I nominate something you grew (or got from a friend who grew it, if you have no garden)
white wine
Can I add one?
Sour Cream
I'd like to add a few:
lambic
peaches
molasses
figs
KM, M'Lady, Gabriella,
Added.
Danielle,
We limit nominations to one per event to keep the list within reason. Since I'm not sure whether you mean lambic beer or something else, I'll add peaches to the list.
Can I add too,
Jersey fresh corn
Cheddar
Well, Im late, but I'd like to add potatoes.
UH...this is SO confusing...this is what you wrote:
"Ingredient nominations will be accepted through Friday July 30th (July 30th???) at 8:00 pm EST and will be posted immediately thereafter.
3) The submission date for entries will Monday, July 10 (July 10th???)at 10:00 am EST."
SO, there is a problem there, the 10th is before the 30th...does this mean the event is closed?
If so, Sticky Date seems to think "NOW THROUGH JULY 19th - Paper Chef #19 - Call for Nomination of Ingredients. Complete participation details can be found here."
Can you clarify?
THANKS!
Rachel,
This is the July Paper Chef, for info on the next one (August) go to Paper Chef 19, The Results and scroll to the bottom of the post.
