Spot-On: How to Pick a Peach
Russ Parson's How to Read a French Fry is an outstanding introduction to the science of cooking and I enjoyed reading it immensely. So when his latest book, How to Pick a Peach:The Search for Flavor from Farm to Table, was released I was looking forward to reading it as well. Interviews with Parsons on All Things Considered and The Splendid Table further whetted my appetite for the book. Sadly, when I finally read it I was disappointed. Not greatly disappointed, less so as I continued reading, and I'm glad I stuck with it...

I'm disappointed that your "I'm disappointed" is the last taste you want to leave in your readers' mouths before they jump. They might not click at all, thinking how disappointed you were, when you actually go on to praise the book quite a lot.
I'm already on record for having said how much I love the book, and wish it would be taught in schools. It's filled with good and useful information, and is exactly the kind of thing that would be an antidote to the relentless marketing education our youth get in front of the television. It is that education that has led to the epidemic obesity, diabetes, and destruction of the earth.
I'm not even trying to be green. It's just a really really good book, and I think his work deserves better than being distilled into "I was disappointed." (How would you feel if you had written than book?)
I hope you consider this in the spirit in which it's offered. If I had expectations about the book, I don't remember what they were, but I was delighted with what I found.
I don't think many people will get your joke about the book lacking a cohesive story line and consistent character development, but I did. (Wouldn't "ripening" count as "character development"? Heh.)
Many thanks,
Tana
Well dissappointed or not, all i know is that Peach Cobbler is on my mind now that you mention peaches, and thats good stuff! Thanks for the info on this book :)
