I grew up drinking well water. The well was 220 feet deep and my father had the water tested every year. It wasn’t pristine, it had both mineral and bacteriological contaminants but both were within acceptable limits, at least for the time, and the water tasted good. Water with real flavor, albeit a mild, unassuming flavor.
My son works at a small dairy bottling plant. One of the things they bottle is water. They take the cities water, which comes from lake Michigan, and bottle it. I also don't understand the need to purchase something you can get at home by turning on the tap.
Not only that, but studies have shown that contaminants from the plastic leach into the water and have adverse affects on our health. And I *hate* the waste products! I refuse to buy bottled water. I prefer to use a thermos (non plastic) to carry water, although I have compromised with family and purchased reuseable (washable) plastic water totes as well. Good and timely article, Kevin. I hope people listen to you!
Kevin, my dad was career Army. We got to a place overseas, drank the water---ate the food---got sick (or not) and that was that. I am like you. Mid 50's and I don't catch every little bug that goes by. I believe it is because we didn't have a mania about germs. I think that is why I am so healthy. I am a peasant who eats food that falls on the floor... Regards, I love your site. Leyla
Lyla, When I lived in Egypt my entire family came down with the pharaoh's curse within the first month. Not me. I waited for two months and then came down with his grandfather's curse which was much worse. But I've only been that sick once since then.
And I too eat like a peasant -- although I do adhere to the five-minute rule. (I've heard some folks think it's a five-second rule. Wimps.)

UP,
Me neither.

Andrea,
I'll buy bottled water on a road trip -- and I'm glad to have the option because I don't like soft drinks -- but that's the only time.
