Spot-On: Southern Belly

Click to enlarge.

John T. Edge is a member of the food writing culinoscenti, although he would blush to read that assessment — perhaps not least because of the awkward neologism. But how else should I describe someone who combines a knowledge of food and culture with insight into the combination and an ability to articulate that knowledge and insight? He, along with Calvin Trillan, Russ Parsons, Michael Ruhlman, and a few others, is one of the best food writers in the business and his latest book, Southern Belly: The Ultimate Food Lovers Guide to the South, reflects that skill.

Great review, I think I would enjoy reading Southern Belly. I grew up in Lexington SC, and am familiar with Maurice Bessinger. He is known for his outstanding opinions, which makes him a very colorful personality. I have lived in different parts of SC, also
San Antonio TX, Greensboro, NC, and I have been here in Knoxville for about twenty years. I have loved every place we lived, and feel I have experienced some of the best of the south in cuisine, and lovely gracious people.

I went to Dollywood yesterday for the Bluegrass and BBQ Festival. I thought it interesting how some BBQ places are now giving you a choice of BBQ sauces, whereas the BBQ sauce used to define the establishment. There were 4 different sauces from which you could choose. Of course, I tried them all. :^}

Judy,
I decided the roughly $50 charged for entrance was more than I wanted to pay for barbeque.

Yes, if you don't like bluegrass music, that would be a lot to pay for BBQ. Bluegrass is not my favorite music, but my husband likes it a lot, and I like it okay. We usually buy season tickets, one a gold because if you go much it will pay you to have the gold card. Parking is now $7.00, and you get 20% off any purchase in the park, that includes any food. We have family that visits and expects us to go with them. Three times and you have recouped your money. No, I am not being paid for this. ha I will say, I have never been diappointed when I have gone. The shows are great, and if you have kids, it has good clean fun, and would be a safe place for them.
