Spot-On: At Your Service
If you follow my Spot-On column then you know how passionate I am on the subject of cooking for yourself, family, loved ones, and friends. You may have gathered that I consider cooking fundamental to not only family life, but even civilization. Columns such as "Love's Labor" or "Teach Your Children Well" speak to that belief. So it may seem at least somewhat dissonant that I work as a personal chef — in some way the opposite of what I preach.

That's a lot to consider. But I have to laugh at this:
"The oldest of these services, personal chefs.."
Perhaps that is the oldest service- for men. *laughs*
S'kat,
> "The oldest of these services, personal chefs.."
The original version was a bit more explicit about the connections.{g}
I guess my arrangement is a bit different, wherein the weight-watching client tells me everything he doesn't like, then I make a bunch of meals--unfrozen--and drop some of them at his office, others at his house.
I really like not haggling over menus.
Ed,
The nice thing about personal cheffing is that the arrangement is highly negotiable.
Hi Kevin and thanks for your article. For several years, mainly around the holidays, I make Pastrami and other assorted Deli foods from recipes left to me by my Grandfather. We've always invited guests to join us when we're serving those meals and they almost always embarrass me with their compliments. I didn't seriously take them too much to heart until this year when about a little more than a half dozen of them asked if they could pay me to make these various dishes and cured meats for them. By profession I'm a research/clinical behavioral scientist who's very much retired albeit, I love to cook. I live in Northern California and have no idea if there are legal restrictions permitting or forbidding me to do this for my friends (given the numbers) or what sort of charges should apply if I can do it. I hoped; perhaps, given your knowledge, that you might be able to advise me. Thanks again for great writing and here's hoping your geographic region and your tummy's circadian rhythm get together soon.
