Although I seldom buy cookbooks anymore, I do subscribe to food magazines. The magazines offer loads of ideas even if I don't follow a specific recipe. That's also why I publish recipes on this blog. It isn't that I expect a reader to follow the recipe explicitly — in fact I post a disclaimer warning against doing so (look in the right-hand sidebar) — but I hope someone may find my use of cornmeal in pancakes or the addition of juniper berries to beef stew worthwhile.

Kevin, I'm also a fan of Art of Eating and also found the most recent issue a bit much too much about certain Italian wines. But Behr has done some terrific journalism on local food and agriculture. Still, for food writing, I don't think there's any better than John Thorne and his newsletter, Simple Cooking. I give credit to Ruth Reichle for bringing Gourmet up to speed with current food issues.
Ed,
Behr is wonderfully passionate. I spoke to him Saturday and confessed my love/hate relationship with his magazine. I'm hugely fond of Thorne's writing, but find his newsletter weak. I may check out Gourmet aain on your recommendation.
Ha. Never heard of it - but am glad to now, thanks! :-)
I may have to investigate this magazine. I love good food reading.
And cornmeal in pancakes? That's what makes them fabulous!
